Quabbin Mediation (QM) and Mediation Services of North Central Massachusetts (MSI) are seeking veterans and veterans' family members to participate in a free 35-hour Veterans Mediation training the two non-profit mediation organizations will offer this fall.

"We are pleased to partner with MSI to expand Veterans Mediation to include the North Central region," said Sharon Tracy, QM's executive director. QM launched the innovative program in Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden counties, and the North Quabbin in 2007. Elaine Sheerin, executive director of MSI added, "Veterans Mediation is a powerful tool for volunteer veterans to help other veterans and their families find their own solutions to difficult conflicts. The knowledge, understanding and common bond that a veteran can bring to this process is invaluable."

A mediator is a third party neutral who works with others to help them find fair and durable resolutions to their disputes. Mediations are voluntary, confidential, and mediators do not judge or take sides.

The Veterans Mediation training is designed for those who have served in the military and National Guard and their families because they understand the military experience and re-entry into civilian life. As residents of our communities, these veteran mediators will be called on to work in conjunction with QM, MSI, veteran's service officers, and veterans' organizations to help those in conflict.

"You may make a good mediator if you are someone people trust, if you enjoy working with people," Tracy said. Sheerin explained there is an application and interview process. "Volunteering as a mediator is a fulfilling way to make a difference in the community. If you are interested, please contact either program and we will send you an application," Sheerin said.

MSI and QM are approved by the Massachusetts court system to train and supervise community volunteers. Both programs provide mediation services to the courts and in the community. This Veterans Mediation training is funded in part by a grant from the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts.
